Mirassol is a town in the interior of Sao Paulo. The nearest places have impossible names like Votuporonga and Nhandeara. It’s a place where the signs are painted rather than neon, because you don’t need a lighted sign when everything closes at night. Buzzards and loose chickens eye you from the side of the road like curious old men as you pass by . The mornings start cool but the afternoon heat is severe. Beaten into the shade, the after lunch crowd sips plastic cups of too sweet coffee under building awnings and in the shade of tough looking trees. At night, families sit under their garage doors in plastic chairs as their houses cool down. Little dogs roam the street with no owner, bothering no one.
